The Preacher’s Piece – February 24, 2019
Today’s column comes from the text of a sermon I preached at Martintown Community Church on February 24th. The title of the message is “Jesus Is Better.”
Jesus is not complicated. It’s a simple message. In 2 Corinthians chapter 11, the Apostle Paul is writing a letter to a church in the Roman city of Corinth, which was a flourishing economic center at that time, and in that letter he is discussing a fear he has that the people will receive a different message than the true message he brought to them of Jesus. He says in 2 Corinthians 11:3: “But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.”
News from the Brown’s
“If we give God service, it must be because He gives us grace. We work for Him because He works for us.” DL Moody. Isn’t that the truth? Kathy and I start our twentieth year of serving Him through the Fellowship of Christian Farmers. What a journey it has been! We do work for Him and anything we may have accomplished is because of Him and it’s certainly in spite of our shortcomings. We struggle as human beings just like everyone. 2018 was a very successful year and 2019 is shaping up to be even busier.
The Preacher’s Piece – February 17, 2019
My wife and I celebrated our 37th wedding anniversary on February 14th. Sometimes I don’t even feel like I’m 37 years old let alone been married that long. We always try to get away and do something special on our anniversary. When we do get away we like to go where it is warm. Many years ago on our first anniversary we traveled to Florida and spent a few days with some friends.
Mission Trip: Mexico
The Fellowship of Christian Farmers, International will be heading to Torreon once again this year to continue working on projects in support of Pastor Tony Gomez’s church in Gomez, Palacio. This year, a most ambitious project is in the works. A full size soccer field, complete with artificial turf and a sun shade will be built on the property, as long as the turf makes it into Mexico.
Disaster Relief in Marianna, Florida
It was a great time to bug out of Illinois as the wind chill dipped to minus 60. Hurricane Michael struck the Florida Panhandle on October 10, 2018 as a high category 4, with wind speeds of 155 mph, causing massive destruction along the panhandle coast, near Panama City. Damage was nearly as great 50 miles inland, near Marianna, Florida.
