Prayer Guide and Devotional – September 16, 2024

knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.

Jewish tradition has hundreds and hundreds of written and oral laws that have been passed down through the centuries. And even today, most people look to the 10 Commandments given to Moses by God on the mountain as the basis for all people’s behavior. Paul reminds us that these laws are a great guide to moral living but living life according to those laws will not make us right with God. Living by those laws will not rid ourselves of the horrible stench of sin which separates us from God. When we try to justify ourselves by obeying these laws we are trying to earn our way into heaven. Paul reminds us it is through Jesus Christ alone that we are made clean and made right before God. So many of us would prefer living by these laws to get to heaven because it is something they can see and understand better. It is hard for many to think that by receiving Jesus into our hearts and becoming one with Him through faith that we are satisfying God. Remember, the law cannot get us to heaven, faith in Jesus is the only way to heaven. We are justified before God, only, by our faith and trust in Jesus.
Lord, I do not fully understand how I can be made clean from my sins by my faith in Lord Jesus. But You say it is so and I believe it. I thank you Jesus for Your death and resurrection and washing my sins away with Your blood and I receive Your cleansing blood. Jesus, help me to be one with You and live up to Your standards!!
