Prayer Guide and Devotional – September 11, 2024

When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy.

Sometimes we can be so fortunate. We look and realize how well off we are. We might not struggle to pay bills. We may have some very nice vehicles. We may have a large home or even multiple homes. We may take some nice vacations and not worry about the cost. That is all blessing of the Lord. We must realize who that came from, God. But there are times when we look too strongly at our personal wealth and forget about the Lord. This rich and young ruler struggled very much with how to handle the blessings the Lord gave him. The Lord was telling him your heart now goes out to your possessions and no longer to the Lord. The Lord was not telling him having wealth was wrong. Jesus was pointing out, if he wanted to get right with the Lord, take some of your excess and share it with those who have nothing. When we pray to ask the Lord to help a person or a group of people in need, how is it the Lord takes care of them? The Lord takes care of them by sending His people to them and providing for their needs and showing them love. When the Spirit of the Lord prompts you to give, He is not robbing you of your possessions but making you a stronger and better person for Jesus Christ by sharing with those in need.
Lord, we thank you so much for the blessings you give us all. But, Lord, help us to love the giver of the gift more than the gift itself. And it is possible sometimes Lord that we must give away a gift for us to grow closer to you. Give us the wisdom to know how we should act with all that you give us and the strength to do the right thing!
