Matthew 16:18
And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
The picture above is a cave in the side of a huge rock mountain in the Caesarea Phillipi region on the outskirts of Galilee. It is said the rock it is made from is 100 feet tall and 500 feet wide. The city of Caesarea Phillipi sits on this rock. It was in this area that Jesus traveled and asked His disciples who men said He was. They responded Elijah and others said a prophet. Then Jesus asked point blank, who do YOU say that I am. Peter answered “You are the Christ. The Son of the living God.” Jesus knew nobody told Peter this but God. It was obvious the Holy Spirit was already working through Peter. Jesus has now had Peter at His side for quite a while as Jesus has walked the various roads, spoke to the masses, and performed many miracles. He knew Peter, though strong willed, was the person that would help build Jesus church (the family of God). Peter had the demeanor and character of a leader and was seen as a rock (very solid and steady in all he did) by Jesus and Jesus would use Peter to lead Jesus disciples in Jesus absence. Just like that huge rock that holds up the city of Caesarea Phillipi, Peter would be a similar support to those following Jesus. Peter was already heeding the Holy Spirit’s guidance in his life and he would be the one to lead the church once Jesus has ascended to heaven. Oh to be trusted and called by the Lord!! We can all be a rock for Jesus today!! Lord, I know that I do not have that strength that Peter had. Your Holy Spirit used Peter in a mighty way. Thank You Lord for choosing an ordinary person to carry the teachings and love of Lord Jesus to the world. I pray that You might see a little something in me and Your Spirit would engulf me and use me in any way You desire to further Your kingdom in the world today. Thank You Lord! In Jesus name, Amen!!
