Prayer Guide and Devotional
Amos 5:18-19
Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord!
For what good is the day of the Lord to you?
It will be darkness, and not light.
It will be as though a man fled from a lion,
And a bear met him!
Or as though he went into the house,
Leaned his hand on the wall,
And a serpent bit him!
The Israelites had a bad habit of falling away from the Lord. They were the Lord’s chosen people. Yet, they often would start following false gods. Even with their offensive behavior towards the Lord, they would still look for “The Day of the Lord” or the Lord’s coming in person to lead and bless them. The Lord told them they did not deserve His blessing. Why were they thinking they could get it when they were following false gods? The Lord told them they were like a man fleeing from a lion only to run into a bear. Then, escaping the bear, they go into a house and think they are safe only to be bitten by a snake. The Lord was telling them they will find one evil after another. They offend God with their behavior and so they will not get His protection or blessings. We have this today. As God’s children we can still live lives offensive to God. We can watch bad movies, listen to bad music, read bad literature, use offensive language, and behave badly, even though we are His children. Do not be one that flees from a lion only to find a bear. Do not be one that runs from one evil to another as you run from one offense of God to another. Doing so you do not deserve His blessings and protection. Being saved is one thing but we still must choose living right for the Lord.
Lord, I realize, even though I have received Lord Jesus into my heart and life, I still must make the personal decision everyday to live right for You. The closer I am to You, the easier it is to make Godly decisions in my life. I ask You to help me get closer to You and show the world Your love through Godly behavior. I love You Lord!! In Jesus Name, Amen!!
