Matthew 10:16
I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
How shrewd is a snake? This is the puzzling part about this verse. The innocence of doves is known to most of us. The symbol of a dove is often used for peace. The Spirit of the Lord descended upon Jesus when He was baptized. But, did you ever stop and think why the Lord choose to bring the shrewdness of a snake into this verse? Snakes creep on the ground waiting for their prey to come by and then they attack. Some snakes strangle their prey, others have venomous bites. Many snakes swallow their victims whole. The prey is unsuspecting and has no time to react. When we are taking the Lord’s Word to the world, the world is full of wolves ready to devour any sheep that is not aware. The Lord loves us so much that He does not want us to be devoured, so He warns us to be as shrewd as the snakes are. He also tells us to be as innocent as doves. The Lord wants us to do His work, but not in a sneaky way, like a snake, but in an innocent way like a dove. Bringing peace and not fear. Now, go out into the world and be as shrewd as snakes yet as innocent as doves! Be like the image in the picture above.
Lord, thank you for showing me how to share You with the world. Lord, may Your love fill me so that I can do Your work and bring others to You regardless of the wolves in the world. Help me to be as shrewd as a snake and as innocent as a dove. I want many others to come into Your Kingdom with peace and not fear. Thank You Lord! In Jesus name, Amen!!
