Prayer Guide and Devotional – August 12, 2024

Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”

But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money!

Simon was a sorcerer living in Samaria. He dazzled the people with his sorcery claiming he had the power of God. This made him a big man among the people. He saw how the Apostles laid hands on people and they received the Holy Spirit of God into their lives. The Apostles were placing hands on new converts to following Jesus and the Lord placed His Holy Spirit within each of them. Simon thought if he could have this power of God he would be an even greater person among the people. So, Simon offered money to the Apostles in an attempt to buy God’s power. Boy, did Simon mess up! Nobody can buy from the Lord what He gives for free. Remember, the Lord does not look at a persons outer appearance but at the heart of the person. Simon’s heart was all wrong. His intentions were all wrong. His intentions were not to bless the people but to bless himself by making himself a bigger man among the people. We all must realize the Lord can see our intentions. He knows everything about each of us. When we approach the Lord, make sure it is in humility and meekness and for Godly reasons. It is not your wallet the Lord wants, it is your heart!!
Lord, I do not ever want to offend You. I want to be a child of Yours that pleases You in every way. I am blessed by having You in charge of my entire life. Help me to live each day not for myself but to give all glory to You. In Jesus name, Amen!!
