Prayer Guide and Devotional – September 25, 2023
Leviticus 16:29-31
“This shall be a statute forever for you: In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether a native of your own country or a stranger who dwells among you. For on that day the priest shall make atonement for you, to cleanse you, that you may be clean from all your sins before the Lord. It is a sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you shall afflict your souls. It is a statute forever.
Yom Kippur
(See also Leviticus 23:26-32)
For the Jewish people, Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement. Atonement means covering. It is the Jews Holiest Day of the year when they are closest to God. The Jews are to be forgiven, purified, and cleansed of all their sins. It is observed from several minutes before sunset on September 24, until after nightfall on September 25 this year. The Jewish people are having their sins covered for the year away from God’s sight. This was the only day of the year a Priest could enter the Temple’s inner most sanctum. During Old Testament times a Priest would sprinkle blood of sacrificial animals on the Ark and release a goat into the desert as a sign of releasing their sins for the year. This is to be a day of no work and fasting. If someone works or does not fast they are to be cutoff from the people. For nearly 26 hours the Jewish people are to “afflict their souls”: They stay away from food and drink, do not wash or apply lotions or creams, do not wear leather footwear, and abstain from marital relations. Instead, they are to spend the day in synagogue, praying for forgiveness. Since the destruction of the Temple Yom Kippur has not been observed as it was in ancient times. Often on this day in synagogues around the world passages from Leviticus 16 and Leviticus 23 regarding The Day of Atonement are read out loud and prayers are made.
Lord, I ask that all the Jewish people would come close to You and remain there all their lives. That they would understand You to the fullest and come to the knowledge that they truly can have their sins completely washed away. I ask You impress Your salvation message upon their hearts, their minds, and their souls. Their eternity with You is at stake. In Jesus name, Amen!!
