At the Root
Every farmer understands that a healthy plant depends on a strong root system for nourishment and stability. Each season, the ground must be broken up and prepared for planting. Roots provide the support and nutrients a plant needs to live and grow.
As trees grow taller, their roots reach deeper into the soil and spread wider. Through the soil, they receive the nutrients needed for each seed, kernel, or acorn to become what it was designed to be.
More than 250 years ago, the seeds of freedom began spreading throughout the New World. The tyranny and heavy taxation imposed by Britain stirred the hearts of colonists who longed to live, work, and worship according to their convictions. Many had left Europe seeking this very freedom and hoping to establish roots that would grow into a great nation.
The Roots of a Nation
The roots that shaped the United States of America were deeply connected to biblical truth and Christian conviction. Many of our forefathers believed that true freedom could only be found through faith in God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Patrick Henry, an attorney and governor of Virginia, is credited with the statement:
“It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but Christians; not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ!”
They understood that freedom was not ultimately rooted in religion but in a relationship with the true and living God through His Son, Jesus Christ.
These convictions grew deep into the hearts and souls of the men and women of the Revolution. They were willing to fight, sacrifice, and even give their lives to establish and preserve freedom for future generations.
Through courage and determination, they planted a seed that has endured for more than two centuries. Another well-known statement attributed to Patrick Henry came at the conclusion of his speech at the Second Virginia Convention in 1775:
“I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death.”
Firmly Rooted in Christ
Today, we too must be rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We must stand for truth, protect freedom, and proclaim the good news that Jesus brings.
Christ came from Heaven proclaiming liberty to those held captive by sin. He offers forgiveness, freedom, and eternal life to all who place their trust in Him.
In Ephesians 3:17–19, the Apostle Paul reminds believers to be rooted and grounded in love so they may understand the greatness of Christ’s love and be filled with the fullness of God.
