Farmers Serving Farmers: Helping Farmers Close to Home

(The Bush family studies the best way to strengthen the H-brace on Katherine’s new livestock fence. She no longer lives in constant fear that the animals are loose!)

Disaster relief doesn’t always require traveling out of state or spending several days away. Sometimes, help is needed right in our own communities.

Farmers Serving Farmers is a new ministry of the Fellowship of Christian Farmers International (FCFI) that helps farmers with disabilities, illnesses, or injuries make their farms more accessible so they can continue working and earning an income.

Serving Farmers Through Practical Help

In the fall of 2026, the first group of FCFI volunteers gathered at a Michigan widow’s farm to improve accessibility and make daily farm tasks easier. They modified poultry breeding pens, repaired livestock fencing, and organized the farm shop. These improvements helped her continue managing the poultry operation she and her husband owned despite her arthritis.

The successful workday demonstrated how volunteers can make a meaningful difference by sharing their time, skills, and willingness to serve.

(After 2 years of serious illness and subsequent passing of Katherine’s husband, the farm shop was cluttered and she could not find where he had placed tools. The FCFI team cleaned and organized this space so it is now useable for Katherine)

How You Can Help

FCFI is preparing for more service projects and hopes to build a network of volunteers to help more farmers with accessibility.

You don’t need special skills to participate. Some projects may require specific expertise, but every project needs willing hands and hearts. Individuals, families, church groups, youth groups, and community members are welcome to get involved.

There is no set time commitment, and you are not obligated to accept every volunteer request. Projects will generally be within one or two counties of your home to help minimize travel.

Through Farmers Serving Farmers, volunteers can put their faith into action by helping fellow farmers maintain their independence and continue their livelihoods.
