SUPER TUESDAY TORNADOES RELIEF CAMPAIGN BEGINS
“Cleaning Up Tennessee and Kentucky Farms following February 5th Tornadoes”
Lexington, Illinois(February 8, 2008) The Fellowship of Christian Farmers, International is announcing, today, its campaign to help farmers and ranchers in Tennessee and Kentucky clean-up and re-build following the February 5th “Super Tuesday Tornadoes”. The tornadoes reached EF-4 and was on the ground for over an hour following I-40 from Memphis to northeast of Nashville. The Fellowship of Christian Farmers is organizing its relief effort for Tennessee counties, Macon and Sumner. Downed trees need to be cleared and temporary repairs need to be made on homes. The tornadoes spread trash all across fields that will need to be removed ahead of the spring planting. Electric fences being used in pastures for cattle grazing were destroyed and need to be re-built.
Kansas Wheat farmers and Cattlemen who received help from fencebuilding crews following the May 4, 2007 Greensburg, Kansas tornado, will now drive the Fellowship of Christian Farmers MotorCoach to Brownsville, Tennessee for use as a bunkhouse to house farmers volunteering their time helping in rural Jackson, TN, with tornado clean-up. Over 550 volunteers from 12 states responded to the need to re-build South Louisiana farms following Hurricane Rita in September 2005 and in the four counties surrounding Greensburg , Kansas over the past year and a half. Now, Kansas wheat farmers and cattlemen want to be part of helping their Tennessee and Kentucky neighbors.
Melvin Bell, FCFI Rapid Response Coordinator will be organizing work projects and assessing what types of equipment will need to be shipped to Tennessee and Kentucky for the clean-up campaign. Contact Melvin Bell or the FCFI Home office for details.
The Fellowship of Christian Farmers will have exhibits at the National Farm Machinery Show, February 13-16th in Louisville; Hawkeye Farm Show, Cedar Falls, Iowa February 20-22nd; Western Farm Show, February 22-24th in Kansas City; and the Commodity Classic for Corn, Soybean and Wheat Growers in Nashville February 28- March 1st.
